Creative Critical Reflection

Introduction

One creative and exciting challenge that combines the art and technical skills is to produce a music video. To create my final project in my media studies advanced portfolio, I produced a music video for All Of Me from The Artist, starring my model Sarah Isac. This project allowed me to learn about all aspects of video production — planning, shooting, editing — while also telling a more meaningful story, one that connected with the audience. In this essay, I will answer four questions about my video, namely how mine adheres to or diverges from conventions in the music video genre, how mine connects with the audience and how it may be consumed in the real world, how my production skills have developed over time and how I engaged with different technologies during the process.

How your product uses or challenges conventions and how it represents social groups or issues?

Use of Conventions:

Common features of music videos, for example, a visual story and focus on the performer, are also prominent features of the music video "The Artist". The clip opens with a close shot of Sarah's face, her thoughtful expression as she prepares to sing. This immediately pulls viewers into her emotional arc.

I relied on dynamic camera movements, such as tracking shots that follow Sarahthrough colorful artistic spaces, including a parc full of green trees. This is sort of creative and it is also a typical reference to way artists are being shown in a music video.

Vivid colors and artful lighting helped set the tone of the song. For instance, during the first part, the light turns warm and gold, suggesting inspiration and creativity, a common theme in such a music video.

Challenging Conventions:

Although my video follows some classic music video styles, I also wan
ted to incorporate creative and out of the box scenes to depict that it is more than a basic storyline. I put talks between the main charachter sarah and a boy, as I'm interested how messy and surprising creativity can be. No clear storyline; the video relies on emotional scenes to illustrate the struggles of artists. One section depicts dark figures around Sarah, symbolizing her self-doubt — something that many creatives experience.

Representation of Social Groups and Issues:

The video depicts the battles that artists face, including second guessing themselves, feeling pressure to conform, staying true to their craft. Sarah’s arc will resonate with anyone who has felt like this. Including painting and music, the video suggests all art is important. It makes viewers feel good about their own unique talents and not change for anyone.

What is your product and how does it interact with your audience how would it be distributed as a real media text?

Connecting with the Audience:

The Artist resonates with humans through themes of creativity and self-expression — things all humans can identify with. The combination of the lyrics from this song and the actual visual art journey that Sarah goes through leads to an emotional experience that speaks to anyone who has ever pursued a passion. I used Instagram and TikTok to get the video in front of more people. I posted little videos, behind-the-scenes clips and launched a hashtag challenge where people would create their own art, establishing a little online community around the video.

How to Share the Video in Real Life:

I would also put The Artist on YouTube and Instagram to access a larger audience. These platforms are easy to reach, and people can like, share, and comment on the video. I could also distribute it to music video-friendly streaming outlets, like Spotify. It would have to partner with influencers in art and music to help spread the word even further. Another idea is submitting the video to film festivals or art events, where less people would see it and discuss its message more deeply.

What have you learnt about your production techniques in the course of this project?

Pre-Production: Planning Stage

The planning aspect of the project allowed me to produce the entire concept for the video. I began with writing a script and drawing a storyboard to help organize each individual scene and consider camera angles, and lighting. I worked closely with Sarah and many others to ensure we were all aligned on creative direction. This has helped me grow as a team member and an effective communicator.

Filming Stage (Production):

I learned to shoot a camera better while filming. To give the video more life I experimented with different kinds of shots and movements, such as dolly shots and handheld filming. Sifting through a chorus of cuts, for instance, fast-moving camera shots were reserved for exciting parts of the song and slower, steady shots are used in calmer moments. I also learned how to use lighting equipment to set the mood — softer lights for dreamy scenes and brighter lights for emotional parts.

Editing Phase (Post Production):

In the editing process, I was introduced to Adobe Premiere Pro and improved my skills in it. I learned to cut and arrange scenes, add transitions, and color grade the video to give it a cohesive, professional look. To make the video more engaging and focus on the emotional moments, I also incorporated visual effects such as slow motion and paint animations. Color grading played its role in maintaining the mood and feel of the video.

How did you combine technologies — software, hardware, online — in this project?

Hardware (Equipment):

For filming the video, I used a DSLR camera. It provided enormous control over focus, lighting, and overall image quality. I used a tripod to shoot steady scenes, and a gimbal was helpful for smooth moving shots. I also used some softbox and LED lights to control the lightning. I used backlighting in a few scenes to emphasize Sarah and create more drastic visuals as well.

Software (Editing Tools):

I used Adobe Premiere Pro to cut clips, add effects and structure everything. During the chorus, I also built paint splashes and other visual effects in Adobe After Effects. This was facilitated through these tools to help produce a cleaner and more imaginative final production.

Web & Social Media — Complementary Online Tools

When I needed to learn a new editing skill, I would open the book and learn from topics related to Editing. A huge part of my promotion plan was social media. I created buzz about the video on Instagram and TikTok with countdowns and previews. These platforms allowed me to test and gather feedback before the final release and reach a bigger audience.

Conclusion

Making the music video, to me, was a great opportunity to learn. It provided a better understanding of video production and allowed me to explore concepts about identity and creativity. By employing and breaking traditional music video conventions, I was able to tell a moving story that resonated with others. I definitely grew a lot across all aspects of production — planning, filming and editing — and began to learn how to target various technologies to support my vision. This project helped me realize how meaningful and personal media creation can be, and I’m looking forward to applying these skills to more creative projects in the future.
